Cherry's Morecambe Bay
Peter Cherry has published a new book in June 2011 entitled ‘Cherry’s Morecambe Bay’. This is a soft-back with 96 pages and 110 outstanding colour photographs all taken by Peter Cherry, depicting the people and landscape of Morecambe Bay. It differs from two photo-based books about Morecambe Bay published in 2008, in that it features the life of the current ‘Guide to the Sands of Morecambe Bay’, Cedric Robinson - whereas the two 2008 books did not. It also depicts the fishermen from Flookburgh who trawl for shrimps using tractors, and has very many beautiful landscape and sunset photographs taken around Morecambe Bay. It is a ‘must buy’ for those of you who already have one or more books about Morecambe Bay, and makes a very good present at £15.99.
'Cherry's Morecambe Bay' can be ordered from any Waterstones bookshop in the country, if you ask them to transfer a copy from their Lancaster store number 708. It is also available in bookshops in the Morecambe Bay area, in particular the Waterstones stores in Lancaster and Kendal. Other outlets include Carnforth Bookshop, the Wolf House Gallery in Silverdale and Gallery H in Arnside. The official price is £ 15.99.
The sunset cover picture of the book is shown above and the dimensions of the book are 24cm wide by 22cm high and 1cm in thickness.
If you own a copy of Peter Cherry’s ‘On Morecambe Bay’ book which was on sale between 1986 and 1994 - when the 4,000 copies sold out - I hope you don’t think his new book is simply a re-print, as actually only 38% of the photographs in the new book ‘Cherry’s Morecambe Bay’ appeared in his previous book. The other 62% of the photographs have never been published before. On the other hand, those of you who wished the first book had not gone out of print - and never got around to buying it - should be delighted with the new book. The few copies of ‘On Morecambe Bay’ on the second-hand market are now considered as collector’s items and now fetch up to £ 30, whereas the cover price was just £ 9.95 at the time. One was recently found, online, for sale in California at the equivalent price of about £ 30.
As well as people who know and love the Morecambe Bay area, It is anticipated that the new book will be bought by many budding photographers, as an example of how to tackle people and places as subjects. The photographer, Peter Cherry, has the accolade of being a Fellow of The Royal Photographic Society, and is therefore well worth emulating in terms of his photographic style.
